What is metabolomics?

Read our full article here: https://therio.me/blogs/metabolic-testing/what-is-metabolomics-test-ai-health

Metabolomics is the comprehensive study of small molecules, called metabolites, that are produced or modified by the processes happening in your body. Metabolites are involved in every aspect of your body’s biology, from generating energy to eliminating waste, and they provide real-time snapshots of your metabolic state.

Think of it this way: Just as genomics studies your genes and proteomics studies your proteins, metabolomics focuses on the metabolites— the chemical fingerprints of your metabolism. These molecules can tell us a lot about how well different systems in your body are functioning.

By analyzing metabolites in your blood, urine, or tissues, scientists and clinicians can better understand how your body responds to various factors such as diet, exercise, medications, or stress. Metabolomics can also reveal early signs of disease, track how diseases progress, and guide personalized treatment strategies.

At Theriome, we use advanced metabolomic technologies to provide detailed insights into your unique health profile. This helps us offer you personalized solutions tailored to your specific needs, whether that’s improving your performance, enhancing longevity, or addressing chronic health concerns.

Metabolomics gives us a deeper understanding of your health, beyond just looking at your genes or symptoms, allowing for a more comprehensive approach to well-being.

What is the difference between Theriome and other metabolic tests?

Click here to read our full article on the topic.

Theriome Aristotle is created to harness the power of advances in omics studies, systems biology, artificial intelligence, and the entire body of clinical literature. This prevents overwhelm from the tsunami of data and helps ensure that the recommendations are unbiased.

Our Aristotle includes representative metabolites that cover 68% of your metabolomes. The result of the tests is then analyzed using artificial intelligence taking into account the patient’s history and presentation in the context of the current medical literature and the available omic datasets. We also use Digital Twinning to identify the best course of action given your test results, history, presentation, and health goals. Our Digital Twinning algorithm recommends a reasonable list of basic lifestyle changes along with more advanced options like supplements and biohacks. Theriome is not meant for diagnostic use, but rather for health optimization and wellness purposes.

Other metabolic tests like organic acid tests do not come with as robust computational analyses and are more aimed towards diagnostic uses. For example, they may include microbial metabolites for the diagnosis of fungal overgrowth, bacterial overgrowth, or dysbiosis. Some panels include metabolites of neurotransmitter metabolism, mitochondrial pathways, and specific nutritional deficiencies. Without Digital Twinning, these tests tend to suggest treatments per diagnosis, which can lead to a long list of supplement recommendations.

What’s the difference between the Theriome Aristotle metabolomic test and genetic testing?

The Theriome Aristotle test is a metabolomic test that assesses collections of metabolites, grouping them into health domains, from which an overall health score is calculated. Genetic testing refers to the assessments of one's DNA for the presence or absence of variations in the DNA associated with health risks. For more, please read our blog on the difference between metabolomic and genomic testing here: https://therio.me/blogs/metabolic-testing/10x-health-vs-theriome-aristotle-metabolomic-test

Does Theriome test for genetic variants?

Theriome's testing platform focuses on metabolomics, analyzing metabolites to provide a comprehensive view of your current metabolic state. Unlike genetic tests that analyze DNA to identify inherited predispositions and risks, metabolomics measures the real-time outputs of genetic activity. This approach reveals how your genes are being expressed and how they interact with your environment, lifestyle, and diet. While Theriome does not test for genetic variants directly, the insights gained from metabolomics testing offer a dynamic and actionable understanding of your health that complements genetic information. By focusing on how your body’s biochemical pathways are functioning, Theriome provides a unique perspective that bridges the gap between genetic potential and real-world health outcomes.

For example, we can view methylation pathways without using a genetic profile. Click here to read how metabolomics can be used in methylation analysis.

Does the Theriome Aristotle test calculate my biological age?

Theriome does not calculate biological age or provide a direct measure of the rate of aging. Instead, it offers an "aging score," which reflects a snapshot of how your metabolic health compares to expected norms for your age group. This score is derived from advanced metabolomics analysis, evaluating key biomarkers that correlate with aging processes, such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and metabolic efficiency.

The aging score provides insights into how your lifestyle, environment, and health habits may be influencing your overall metabolic health in the context of aging. This helps identify patterns that might contribute to accelerated or decelerated aging-related changes.

What form of AI does Theriome use?

Theriome leverages advanced AI technologies, including tools built on the OpenAI platform. These generative models, based on large language models, help us analyze and translate complex data into actionable insights. The vast amount of interconnected information in metabolomics, systems biology, and personalized health would be nearly impossible for a human mind to fully map and interpret. By using AI, we can process and integrate this complexity efficiently, providing detailed and tailored recommendations that empower better health decisions. This approach ensures our solutions are both cutting-edge and practical for real-world application.

Will Theriome sell my data? How is my data stored?

Theriome is committed to safeguarding your personal health information. We do not sell your data to third parties. Our focus is on providing you with personalized health insights while ensuring your privacy and data security.

We employ advanced encryption protocols to protect your information during transmission and storage. Theriome is working toward incorporation of blockchain technology into its platform. Blockchain's decentralized and immutable nature ensures that your health information remains secure, transparent, and tamper-proof, providing you with greater control over your personal data.

Is a dried blood spot sample collection comparable to a blood draw? How long is the sample stable and at what temperatures?

Dried blood spot collection provides a highly reliable alternative to traditional blood draws for many metabolomic analyses. It offers comparable results for most metabolites while being more convenient, less invasive, and easier to store and transport. However, for certain tests requiring larger blood volumes or plasma separation, traditional blood draws may still be necessary.  For our purposes, we can gather the same data from dry blood spot.

The dried blood spot sample is stable for up to 10 weeks at room temperature. Metabolite integrity remains at 99% after the blood has dried and the card placed in the aluminum bag for return shipment.

Does Theriome ship internationally? Is return shipping included?

Yes, Theriome ships worldwide. However, we do not include a return label for international orders. International customers are responsible for shipping the sample back to our laboratory.

Return shipping labels are provided for customer

Are there differences in metabolites in terms of long-term vs short term measurement variations?

Some metabolites are more indicative of chronic health, enviromnetal exposure and lifestyle choices than others. For example. palmitic acid and stearic acid are markers of chronic dietary patterns and lipid turnover. Elevated levels indicate a long-term dietary imbalance in saturated fats, impacting cardiovascular health. These markers are relatively stable over weeks to months.  For example:

  • Palmitic acid and stearic acid: Markers of chronic dietary patterns and lipid turnover. Elevated levels indicate a long-term dietary imbalance in saturated fats, impacting cardiovascular health. These markers are relatively stable over weeks to months.
  • Succinic acid, malic acid, and fumaric acid: Critical components of the citric acid cycle. Variations in these can reflect mitochondrial dysfunction or sustained metabolic stress, indicating cellular health over a period of days to weeks.
  • Glycine, alanine, and serine: Reflect liver function over a prolonged period, particularly in the context of protein metabolism and synthesis. Changes in these amino acids may provide insights into liver stress or dysfunction from sustained influences, such as diet or toxins.
  • Glutathione and cysteine: Reflect oxidative stress and detoxification processes. Persistent low levels of these antioxidants suggest chronic exposure to environmental toxins. These antioxidants typically deplete over weeks to months, making them reliable long-term measurements.

Theriome does not currently offer a directory of practitioners trained in using the Theriome Aristotle test.

Why does Theriome use blood metabolites instead of urine metabolites? What is the difference between the two? Is one more reliable than the other?

Theriome uses blood metabolites because they provide a more accurate reflection of your body’s current metabolic status. Blood carries substances that are actively in transport for use or processing within the body, giving insight into dynamic metabolic activity and overall health. In contrast, urine metabolites represent materials that your body is excreting, whether in excess or deemed unnecessary or undesirable.

What is the difference between blood and urine metabolites?

  • Blood Metabolites: These are indicative of real-time processes within the body, such as nutrient absorption, energy production, and detoxification. Blood tests provide a snapshot of how your body is functioning at a given moment.
  • Urine Metabolites: These primarily represent waste products and substances being eliminated by the kidneys. While urine can provide valuable information about certain excretory processes or toxins, it lacks the comprehensive, active metabolic context that blood offers.

Is one more reliable than the other?

Blood tests are widely regarded as more reliable for assessing overall health and metabolic status, as they capture the body’s immediate biochemical activity. However, urine testing can be useful in specific situations, such as monitoring hydration levels, kidney function, or excreted substances like hormones and certain toxins.

By focusing on blood metabolites, Theriome ensures a more precise and actionable understanding of your health, allowing for highly personalized recommendations based on your current metabolic state.
